My mother’s side of the family is Portuguese (specifically from the Autonomous Region of Madeira) and I had at least three different dolls with this outfit on. I think there is even a picture somewhere of my older sister wearing the full national costume
Hi! I saw your post regarding the Norwegian bunads. I would say there is a certain pressure (for women at least) to own a bunad. It is custom to get an adult bunad when you have your confirmation, approximately at age 14. It’s also tradition for an older family member to make, or hand down the bunads. Including all the silver to go with it you’re right - they are incredibly expensive. You would typically get the “essentials” when you get the bunad, and then spend years collecting all the pieces to go with your kind. This is a picture of me from my nursing school graduation lunch. I did the embroideries myself, and my grandmother did the sewing. I don’t feel silly sporting the bonnet - I didn’t spent hours making it not to wear it. I have the capital of Norway, Oslo, kind of bunad. - Johanne
I love the idea of creating a garment with your family, or one that has been passed down by the women in the family. It’s so personal. Thank you so much for submitting this! It’s exactly what I wanted to know! Your bunad is so pretty, especially the embroidered flowers. The embroidery goes all the way around the bottom of your skirt right? Beautiful
